About This Test

The Verbal Memory Test assesses your ability to recognize and remember words in your short-term memory. This test measures verbal working memory capacity, recognition memory, and your ability to distinguish between familiar and novel verbal information.

You'll be presented with a series of words and must decide whether each word has appeared earlier in the current session. The test continues until you make three errors, challenging your sustained attention and memory maintenance over time.

Verbal memory is crucial for language comprehension, reading, following conversations, and academic performance. This type of memory is processed in different brain regions than visual-spatial memory and can be specifically trained and improved.

Memory Strategies

Active Rehearsal: Silently repeat the words you've seen to keep them active in your working memory. Create a mental list that you continuously update.

Semantic Associations: Connect new words to their meanings or create associations with words you've already seen. This creates a richer memory trace that's easier to recall.

Categorization: Group words by categories (animals, colors, emotions) to organize your memory and make recognition more efficient.

Attention Control: Stay focused and avoid distractions. Even brief lapses in attention can cause you to miss words or make false recognitions.
